Oprah ‘Sorry’ for Naming Switzerland in Racism Allegations

Oprah Winfrey apologized Monday for the media firestorm that resulted after she said she experienced racism first-hand while shopping in Switzerland.

“I think that incident in Switzerland was just an incident in Switzerland. I’m really sorry that it got blown up. I purposefully did not mention the name of the store. I’m sorry that I said it was Switzerland,” Winfrey told the Associated Press. “I was just referencing it as an example of being in a place where people don’t expect that you would be able to be there.”

According to Winfrey, the Pretty Woman-esque scenario occurred at an upscale boutique in Zurich, where she claims she was dissuaded from buying an expensive handbag because of the color of her skin.

“[The clerk] says to me, ‘No, it’s too expensive … That one will cost too much. You will not be able to afford that,” she told Entertainment Tonight.

“I could’ve had the whole blow-up thing and thrown down the black card, but why do that?” She added. “But that clearly is, you know… [Racism] still exists. Of course it does.”

The Swiss tourism office has since apologized for the store’s behavior. The clerk in question, meanwhile, claims she was just trying to save Winfrey from wasting $38,000 on a handbag.

Either way, Oprah has very clearly moved on.
