UPDATE 3:11 PM PST: A rep for The Calling described the incident in a statement obtained by PEOPLE:
“After a heavily attended Lapeer Days Festival the singer was abducted after the show during a trip to the local mini-mart. Alex was grabbed by his shirt and hit from behind and lost his footing. He was beaten with a police baton with a gun pointed to his face demanding Band’s ‘Hollywood money.’
“After Band fought back he was cornered in the van with gun to his face and Band told the assailants, ‘Don’t kill me as I am about to be a dad.’ After more beating the assailants responded with, ‘We don’t kill fathers’ and then left him for dead at a local railroad track in Lapeer,” it reads. “Band was left with a fractured lower spine, 15 stitches to lower chin, three broken teeth and is bruised on his side and stomach from the baton beating.
“I never thought my unborn child would be my savior. I am grateful to be alive and I know that I am destined for bringing my music back to my fans,” Band said.
“I take my rehabilitation very seriously I was near death due to this unbelievable situation and the rumors are categorically false and not a hoax as reported,” he added in response to rumors the alleged crime was drug related.
In a bizarre crime, Michigan police are looking into who abducted, robbed and beat The Calling frontman Alex Band in the early morning hours of Aug. 18.
According to Lapeer City Police Department, Band was allegedly forced into a blue colored mini van between 3 and 4 a.m. by two men when he was assaulted, robbed and left on the side of a local road, Celebuzz has confirmed.
After being found by a bandmate, he was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Band’s stepmother Debra Dion says he is now safe at home: “He’s fine. He’s banged up, but he’s home. He’s lucky to be alive,” she told CB!
As first reported by TMZ, the 32-year-old singer was Michigan for a music festival and was taken as he walked to a mini-mart Sunday morning.
The Calling formed back in the early 2000s and is best known for its mega-hit “Wherever You Will Go.”
The case is currently under investigation.
