10 Biggest Movie & TV News This Week (7 December)

Paul

Though WhatCulture.com occasionally posts news stories for some of the bigger announcements, we often miss reporting on stories that fall under the radar or aren’t substantial enough (yet) to write whole articles about. So, we’re introducing a new weekly article devoted to the biggest movie and television news of the week, all in one handy article.

This week turned out to be full of exciting stories involving casting announcements (Wonder Woman and Warcraft among them), release dates for Bourne 5 and a Dredd sequel, and new shows in development at NBC and FX. We also heard from geek favorite director JJ Abrams about the secrecy surrounding Star Trek Into Darkness, had a surprising announcement from Bryan Singer, and were shocked and saddened by the death of Paul Walker.

So, without further ado, let’s jump right into the biggest movie and TV news stories of the week…

10. Bourne 5 Gets a Summer 2015 Release Date

The Bourne Legacy

2015 is shaping up to be the biggest year ever for movies. Whether or not this is a good thing remains to be seen, but as of right now the year is jam packed full of genre films and sequels including Star Wars Episode VII, Batman Vs. Superman, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Jurassic World, Terminator 5, Mission: Impossible 5, Insidious: Chapter 3, and the 13th Friday the 13th film (just to name a few).

Now, we can add Bourne 5 to the list, which will hit theaters on August 14th 2015. Bourne Legacy star Jeremy Renner is set to return, and Justin Lin, who just stepped away from the Fast and Furious franchise, will direct. Tony Gilroy, who either wrote or co-wrote all four previous installments in the franchise, won’t be returning and has been replaced by Anthony Peckham, who co-wrote the 2009 film Sherlock Holmes. There’s no word on whether or not Rachel Weisz will be reprising her Bourne Legacy role (though producer Frank Marshall seems optimistic).

Universal Pictures also released a breakdown of the film, which is remarkably vague:

Blockbuster action director Justin Lin (Fast & Furious series) will direct the fifth installment of Universal Pictures’ BOURNE espionage franchise, inspired by the series created by Robert Ludlum. Jeremy Renner returns as Aaron Cross for this chapter and Frank Marshall once again produces, alongside Jeffrey Weiner and Ben Smith for Captivate. Lin will also produce for his Perfect Storm Entertainment.

The biggest question here is whether or not this will affect Renner’s involvement in Avengers: Age of Ultron (as well as his role in the Mission: Impossible franchise). Joss Whedon has hinted that an Avenger might bite the dust in the sequel, could it be Hawkeye? Only time will tell.
