You’d think that a 16-year-old singer who’s just scored a number one hit on the U.S. iTunes chart would get to enjoy the moment for a bit.
But no, Miley Cyrus fans – of all people – just had to go ahead and ruin the experience for Lorde, whose song “Royals” knocked “Wrecking Ball” out of the top spot this week.
On Thursday, Lorde, whose real name is Ella Yelich-O’Connor, posted the following on Twitter:
wo #1 on US itunes. even if it lasts an hour i feel HAPPY. downside is all these miley fans telling me they’re gonna stab my rotting corpse
– Lorde (@lordemusic) September 19, 2013
The New Zealand singer also retweeted messages from Cyrus fans, including one that told Lorde to “kill yourself you old crusty hag.” Another person told the singer that her “eyes are too far apart.” Before things got any nastier, Cyrus responded to the Twitter attack with this message:
@lordemusic why r people so mean??? Ps your music is awesome

So far, no word on whether Lorde still feels the same way about Cyrus’ music.
