WWE Money In The Bank 2013: Why Ryback vs Chris Jericho Is Most Important Match

WWE Money in the Bank is always a big PPV- so much so that it could be argued that it has taken over Survivor Series’ spot as one of the ‘Big 4 that also include Summerslam, Royal Rumble and, of course Wrestlemania. Part of the reason for this is that so much of importance is decided during the PPV. Not only are there the usual world title matches, but we also get to see an idea of who may be the future World Champions of the company in the coming year- something that everyone gets excited about as the IWC can look at who is getting anointed with the next big push.

But the big match in this year’s MITB is not one of the ladder matches, nor one of the World Title Matches, it is actually a bout that has no title or contract on the line.

The most important match on the card, in my opinion, is between Ryback and Chris Jericho. Why you may ask? Because Ryback needs to be put over and fast.

It wasn’t that long ago that Ryback was seen as the next big thing in the WWE. People were even speculating that maybe he could face the Undertaker at Wrestlemania. Vince and co thought they were onto a good thing when they pushed into a WWE title match against CM Punk at Hell in a Cell last year but the crux of the decision has been that Ryback has not won a PPV match since then- losing to CM Punk at Hell in a Cell and Survivor Series, the Shield at TLC and Elimination Chamber, to Mark Henry at Wrestlemania and John Cena at the Royal Rumble, Extreme Rules and Payback.

Suffice to say that after this huge amount of losses Ryback finds himself in creative purgatory. The big face push came to an abrupt halt because of the white hot momentum of the Shield. The heel turn has got nowhere either simply because Cena has been his opponent- allowing him no way to get over. It’s time for the WWE to set their sights slightly lower with Big Hungry and this match on Sunday could be the perfect way to start.

Chris Jericho has been known for putting on great matches with opponents but this is more important than even his Fandango match. Fandango may have been new, but Jericho had the spectacle of Wrestlemania to help hide some of the match’s slightly iffy moments. Ryback has been in the game too long for that sort of thing to slide as easy and so if it’s a bad match it is very unclear what his short term future will be.

Ryback has all the tools to make this a good match- he has a veteran opponent who will be more than willing to put him over as well as a match that won’t be too long so as to seem slow and dull. It’s all up to him now.
