Peter Phillips, the Queen’s eldest grandchild (rumored to be her favorite. It’s ok. I’m my nana’s favorite) and 11th in line to the British throne, is very close with both Prince Harry and Prince William. When he was born in 1977, Phillips’ mother, the Princess Royal, turned down titles for him and his younger sister, Zara, citing a normal upbringing and privacy as the reasons.
Phillips, who has two young daughters with his wife, Autumn, talked to CNN‘s Max Foster about the family’s excitement over a new baby.
“First and foremost, everyone is ecstatic for both,” Phillips said, which the Duchess of Cornwall seconded yesterday.
“They will make great parents and it’s great to be able to welcome another child into the family, if not from a selfish perspective for my two girls to be able to grow up with a playmate,” he added.
Princess Ann made it a point to raise her children as private citizens, so they would not grow up under the same magnifying glass their royal cousins did.
“He or she will be under a great deal of scrutiny,”Phillips added. “That being said, both of the baby’s parents are used to that and I think there is the structure and infrastructure around them all to be able to protect them to a certain extent.
“Sure, the baby’s going to be in the limelight, just like William was from a very early age.”
Phillips, who was with William and Harry at Balmoral castle when Princess of Diana passed away, has been a strong figure in the boys’ lives. Watch the below video of 2-year-old William playing with Peter and Zara at Harry’s 1984 christening.
