Judge Postpones Decision On Amanda Bynes Conservatorship

Amanda Bynes

A California judge is refusing to place Amanda Bynes under the conservatorship of her parents until he can review the results from her mental evaluation and speak to the actress himself.

The Hairspray star was taken into custody by police on Monday after she allegedly tried to start a fire in a resident’s driveway in Thousand Oaks, close to where her parents live.

She was placed on a psychiatric hold, allowing authorities to keep her under surveillance for up to 72 hours, but the order was extended by two weeks on Thursday, following a hearing in the hospital where Bynes has been confined.

Her concerned parents, Rick and Lynn Bynes, filed legal papers for conservatorship on the same day, requesting control of their daughter’s financial and personal affairs until she can get her life back on track, and their case was heard by Ventura County Superior Court Judge Glen M. Reiser on Friday, but he declined to issue an emergency ruling on the matter as Bynes has already been ordered to remain under doctors’ care for another 14 days.

Instead, the judge is planning to seek the advice of her medics and have a one-on-one chat with Bynes to gauge her mental state for himself, while he will also review the police report of the alleged fire incident.

In addition, he has asked the actress’ court-appointed lawyer, Mary Shea, to interview her client and suggest recommendations ahead of the next hearing into the conservatorship on August 9.

However, it appears Bynes’ attorney is preparing to argue the star is of sane mind – she filed an emergency court motion on Friday in an effort to have the 27 year old released from her extended stay in the psychiatric hospital.
