Does the Belgium national team know something we don’t?
According to reports by Sky Sport’s Pete O’Rourke, and The Independent, the tall Belgian midfielder has been given leave by his national side to delay meeting up with the squad so that he can complete his move to Manchester United.
The Fellaini saga has taken over most of the summer, with his release clause lapsing earlier in the window, and United seeing mutliple bids turned down by Everton, but this deal would represent exactly the kind of marquee signing that United fans have been clamouring for since the transfer window opened.
The Telegraph believe that the deal is imminent, with talks between Everton and United “progressing” according to BBC chief football writer Phil McNulty. And this move by Belgium certainly suggests that something is in the works.
Fellaini would add some major dynamism to the United midfield, chipping in with the kind of goal tally that has been missing since Paul Scholes stopped popping up with 10-plus goals per season, and adding some bite to the side in defensive situations.
He could be joined by Everton team-mate Leighton Baines, with strong links to a move appearing all summer, but The Independent are suggesting that such a move would be unlikely now, despite the player’s interest in moving to the club.
