Arsenal are in advanced talks to sign Real Madrid attacker Mesut Ozil after placing a club record 42.5 million bid, according to the BBC.
The 24-year-old German international could be seen as surplus to requirements at the Bernabeu after the 85.3 million world record signing of Gareth Bale from Tottenham Hotpsur, which was completed yesterday.
Ozil moved to Madrid from German side Werder Bremen in 2010 after impressing in that year’s World Cup in South Africa and has played more than 150 times for the Spanish giants since his 12.4 million move. Arsenal and Manchester United were reported to be interested in signing Ozil three years ago and now The Gunners are looking to finally get their man.
The potential signing of Ozil to the Emirates could now be determined by the player’s thoughts on whether he will secure a regular place in the Real Madrid side now that Bale has added to the strong competition for places.
This edition of the transfer window shuts at 11pm tonight (Monday) and there is a question mark as to whether Arsene Wenger could get such a massive blockbuster signing over the line. So far this window Arsenal have only signed former midfielder Mathieu Flamini on a free transfer after he left AC Milan on a free contract and youngster Yaya Sonogo.
