Lukas Podolski and Mesut Ozil pose for picture.
Despite becoming Arsenal’s most expensive signing in history, Mesut Ozil has revealed he would have joined for nothing, according to The Sun.
The Germany international joined the Gunners for a club-record fee of 42.5 million on transfer deadline day, after leaving Real Madrid in the wake of Gareth Bale’s arrival at the Bernabeu.
And the 24-year-old has since revealed he would have signed for the Londoners for free.
“I would have joined Arsenal for free.”
Gunners’ manager Arsene Wenger personally telephoned the midfielder to push through the deal, something which Ozil has revealed helped push the deal through.
“That flicked a switch and made me see what I’d lost at Real Madrid – trust, transparency, respect.
“He told me exactly how he saw me, how he wanted to use me and what he expected of me.”
The former Werder Bremen man was one of the more noteworthy acquisitions of the summer window when he swapped Los Blancos for north London on deadline day last Monday.
And a lot is expected of a player who currently holds the highest number of assists than anyone currently contesting European football’s top four leagues.
Ozil is expected to make his debut for Arsenal at Sunderland on Saturday, as the Premier League gets back underway following the international break.
Meanwhile, his Germany teammate Lukas Podolski, who posed for a snap with Arsenal’s new signing recently, has promised fans the two would go on to forge a deadly partnership in the seasons to come.
